How UltraPlanner.app Helps You Reach Your Race Goals
Turn training data, race planning, and race-day experience into a personal system.
UltraPlanner helps you turn training data, race planning, and race-day experience into a personal system you can improve over time. The goal is not to create a perfect plan that can never change. The goal is to prepare well, give your crew a clear view of the plan, record what happens during the race, and learn from it afterwards.
Race Training
Build your personal hydration baseline
Use the Sweat Calculator to record sweat tests under different conditions. A run at easy pace in cool weather may produce a very different sweat rate from marathon effort in the heat. Recording multiple tests helps you build a personal sweat-rate map based on the conditions you actually race in.
The calculator estimates your sweat loss per hour using:
- Pre-run and post-run body weight
- Fluid consumed during the run
- Urine produced during the test
- Duration
- Distance and pace
- Temperature and humidity
- Optional sweat sodium concentration
This does not tell you exactly how much you must drink or how much sodium you must take. It gives you useful personal data to guide your planning.
Build the Nutrition Plan
Use your sweat-rate tests as one input when filling the Nutrition Plan with drinks, gels, food, and sodium products. Your plan should reflect what you have tested in training, including fluid, sodium, carbohydrate, and calories per hour; products you tolerate; and aid-station and crew access.
The goal is to build a practical range rather than chase one exact number.
Use the hourly totals
Each hour card in the Nutrition Plan shows totals for that hour. These helper totals make it easier to spot problems before race day, such as one hour with too little fluid, a large sodium gap, too much carbohydrate for your stomach, nutrition concentrated into one part of the race, or an unrealistic amount of products to carry or collect.
Can I realistically follow this hour of the plan?
Review the Race Summary
The Race Summary card at the bottom of the Nutrition Plan gives you the bigger picture. It helps you review the total planned intake across the full race, including fluid, sodium, carbohydrates, calories, and products.
Use it to check whether the plan remains sensible from start to finish. A good plan is not only correct on paper. It must also match your expected race duration, aid stations, crew support, carrying capacity, and stomach tolerance.
Practice and refine
Test your plan during long runs and race-specific sessions. Use the results to refine your fluid, sodium, and nutrition ranges. The closer your training conditions are to race day, the more useful your plan becomes.
Pre-Race
The race plan is most useful when the people supporting you can access it without friction.
Enable Crew Share
Enable Crew Share before race day so your crew can open the shared execution view without account or login delays when the race starts. Set this up in advance, not at the start line, an aid station, or the first unexpected problem.
Choose the crew access level
- In View Only mode, crew can follow the prepared plan.
- In Crew Mode, crew can also add notes during the race.
Crew Mode is useful when you want a shared record of changes, observations, problems, or decisions made during the event.
During the Race
Your crew follows the prepared plan through the shared execution view while adapting it to real conditions, effort, stomach tolerance, and aid-station availability. The plan is a guide, not a rigid instruction that ignores what is happening on the course.
In View Only mode, crew can see the plan and follow the intended nutrition, hydration, timing, bags, and checkpoints.
In Crew Mode, crew can also add notes to the shared plan. This creates a clear record of:
- Changes to nutrition or fluid intake
- Missed products or aid stations
- Stomach problems
- Gear changes
- Crew observations
- Decisions made during the race
This helps the athlete and crew stay aligned when the race becomes difficult or plans need to change.
After the Race
The race does not end when you cross the finish line. Your prepared plan and crew notes give you a useful record to review afterwards.
Look at what worked:
- Which fluid range felt sustainable?
- Which sodium strategy worked well?
- Which foods and products were easy to tolerate?
- Which hourly targets were realistic?
- Which crew handoffs were smooth?
Then look at what needs improvement:
- Did you drink or eat less than planned?
- Did you carry too much or too little?
- Did your stomach struggle at a particular point?
- Did crew need information that was missing from the plan?
- Did changes during the race reveal a gap in preparation?
Use those observations to improve your next Sweat Calculator tests, Nutrition Plan, gear setup, crew instructions, and race strategy.
The Main Idea
UltraPlanner helps you move through a repeatable cycle:
Measure - Plan - Practice - Share - Execute - Review - Improve
The Sweat Calculator helps you collect personal hydration data. The Nutrition Plan, hourly totals, and Race Summary help you turn that data into a practical race strategy. Crew Share helps your support team follow the plan without login friction. Crew Mode can create a race-day record of what actually happened.
Over time, UltraPlanner helps you replace generic advice with a plan that is tested, personal, practical, and continually improving.
